Shipowners can now obtain a new voluntary certification dedicated to management systems of skills and crews. RINA Services, the company of the RINA Group that provides classification, certification, testing and inspection services, has decided to increase its focus on the needs of the shipping world by publishing a standard that lays out the requirements for obtaining such a certification, which is completely new for the maritime sector.

PB Tankers has met this challenge to become more competitive in the market. It is the first shipping company to have requested and obtained the certification. \u201cThe increased technological complexity onboard ships, the continuous evolution of ever-stricter regulations and the assessment of employee preparation, makes the development of a corporate system of skills management increasingly necessary\u201d<\/strong> stated Paolo Moretti, General Manager of shipping business at RINA<\/strong> Services.<\/p>\n Federica Barbaro, Managing Director of PB Tankers,<\/strong> commented on the certification, stating: \u201cWe have always believed that the daily challenges we face in our industry can be overcome through the merits of our personnel both on board and on land. After [receiving certification in] quality and environment, choosing RINA\u2019s voluntary certification also for skills management was a logical consequence of our philosophy.\u201d Federica Barbaro then added: \u201cWe are sure that being the first Italian shipping company to obtain the Management System of Skills Certification represents a value that might be recognized by our most accredited clientele as testimony of the continuous improvement of our services, of employee safety and environmental protection.\u201d<\/p>\n According to the P&I Clubs there are indeed a growing number of accidents attributed to crew’s\u2019 negligence. Therefore, today more than ever it is important that personnel be certified not only according to the requirements of international standards, but also properly trained to perform various tasks, thus reducing the risk of accidents, delays or ship detention.<\/p>\n
